Fatima Masumeh Shrine

The central destination of religious tourism in Qom is the Fatima Masumeh Shrine (S), and also the second pilgrimage center of the country after the holy Mashhad.

The city of Qom is considered the most significant religious base in the world and the second largest pilgrimage center in Iran after Mashhad. The holy shrine of Fatima Masumeh is one of the most popular religious places in this city.

Fatima Masumeh is the daughter of Imam Musa al-Kadhim and Imam Reza's sister. In historical documents and narrations, it is said that by order of Al-Ma'mun, Imam Reza is exiled. After a year, Fatima Masoumeh decides to travel to Khorasan and meet her brother. Unfortunately, in the city of Saveh, a group of Ahl al-Bayt opponents attacked them and, all male caravans martyred. Some narratives say that Fatima Masumeh poisoned. The great lady, after this unfortunate event, fell on the Bedding disease and lost the ability to go to Khorasan. For this reason, he emigrated to Qom and stayed at Musa Ibn Khazra home for 17 days. Eventually, she martyred without visiting his brother.

Qom's people buried their bodies with respect from outside the city and in a place known as the Babelan Garden. In 265 AH, the first dome built by Zaynab bint Ali, the daughter of Imam Muhammad al-Jawad, on his precious graves. Under the command of one of the elders of the Muzaffarids, in 605, the construction of the shrine was started. Safavid Shah Tahmasb, who had a particular respect for the Ahl al-Bayt, built a Zarih by bricks in the late 10th century AH and decorated with tufted tiles and inscriptions, in the all-around shrine. After more than two centuries, in the year 1230 AH, Fath Ali Shah Qajar ordered to rebuild Zarih by silver. The Zarih changed and rebuilt several times over a century, until finally in the year 1368, a new Zarih made.

The shrine of Fatima Masoumeh has three courtyards called the Noe Courtyard (Atabaki courtyard), the Atiq Courtyard (the old courtyard), and the courtyard of Saheb al-Zaman, each of which built in different years. The َAtiq courtyard, located in the north of the shrine, is the first courtyard to be built in the holy shrine on the orders of Shah Ismail Safavid's wife. This courtyard has four porches around it.

The Atabaki courtyard is one of the most beautiful and eye-catching parts of the shrine that consists of four northern, southern, eastern and western porches, each of which leads to a separate entrance. The construction of the Noe courtyard of the shrine, with its four entrances, began in 2002 and ended after three years. On the walls around this courtyard, you can see white Koranic inscriptions and bricks.

There are Minarets in different parts of the shrine. Including the two sides of the gold porch in the Old Courtyard, Minarets of Mirror porch and Minarets of the Noe courtyard.

 

  • What is the best time to go?

Qom has a warm, semi-arid climate. For this reason, the best time to travel to this area is April, May, September and October. The city, as a desert city, has no good drinking water in addition to having hot weather.

 

  • Getting there?

You are on the way about 2 hours from Tehran to this shrine (145 kilometers). You can easily reach Qom through the Persian Gulf freeway. After reaching Qom, go to Zaer Blvd that you can get this shrine.
