Naqsh-e Jahan Square

Naqsh-e Jahan Square includes four historical monuments, Ali Qapu Palace, Shah (Imam) Mosque, Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, and Grand Bazaar of Isfahan (Qeysarriyeh Bazaar). It is also known as Imam Square, which located in the heart of Isfahan province.

Naqsh-e Jahan Square has a rectangular shape with a fabulous skyline which is placed in the downtown of Isfahan province. This old square consists of four major historical monuments which dated back to the Safavid dynasty. You will see Shah (Imam) Mosque on the south side, Ali Qapu Palace on the west side, Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque on the east side, and Grand Bazaar of Isfahan on the north side of the square. The reflection of historical buildings in the long pond located in the middle of the square has created a marvelous view. Moreover, there are 200 two-story stores around the Naqsh-e Jahan Square which selling handicraft of Isfahan. Naqsh-e Jahan Square with a length of 560 meters and a width of 160 meters became one of the largest squares in the world.
 

• History of Naqsh-e Jahan Square
   

There was a large and extended garden in the area of Naqsh-e Jahan Square before selecting Isfahan as the capital of the Safavid dynasty. Naqsh-e Jahan garden was the place of government buildings and palace of the rulers during the Timurid Empire and Aq Qoyunlu. Shah Abbas I began to extend this square at the beginning time of his monarchy. The ethic of fireworks, illumination, and polo had been taken place in this square.

• Imam (Shah) Mosque
   

  Imam Mosque is the most important mosque in the Isfahan which located on the southern side of the Naqsh-e Jahan Square. This mosque contains the spectacular Islamic Architectural ornamentation such as colorful tiles.

You can enjoy the beauties of Isfahan during the Spring. Late March till late May is the best time to visit the Naqsh-e Jahan Square.

• Getting there?
   

Naqsh-e Jahan Square is placed on the downtown if Isfahan. It is possible, to reach Naqsh-e Jahan Square via public transportation as follows paths:

Bus: To reach Naqsh-e Jahan Square, you should use the buses on the square of Imam Hussain - the Ghadir Gardens of the East Terminal, or Imam Hussain Square - use the Hasht Behesht of the Khorasgan Terminal and get off at the Imam Square Station.

Metro: The nearest station is Imam Hossein Square. Then you can reach Naqsh-e Jahan Square by taxi.
