Chahkooh Canyon

Chahkooh Canyon is a valley with a depth of 100 meters, which contains a lot of holes, grooves cut into the rocks. The fantastic shapes that have appeared on these rocks amaze everyone.

Chahkooh Canyon is created by the erosion of sedimentary rocks with a depth of 100 metres. You will visit this majestic site 70 kilometers far from Qeshm Island, Hormozgan province. Due to the presence of four well rings at the beginning part of this site, it was named as Chahkooh Canyon. The rainwater has been stored in these wells. This astonishing canyon registered as a part of the Qeshm Geopark in the UNESCO Organization. Qeshm Geopark with its all natural and historical beauties is the only Geopark in the Middle East.
 

• Features of Chahkooh Canyon
   

Chahkooh Canyon with its holes, corridors, and wonder shapes amazes visitors. It is placed in a rocky mountain which initially appears widespread at the begging with tall walls. Chahkooh Canyon has formed naturally over time. You will see some gaps and holes on the rocks. Heavy rain, wind, and hot sunlight have caused these natural phenomena. The acid of rainwater dissolves the Lime or Calcium bicarbonate of the rocks and burns holes in the rocks. These holes become deeper through the million years and have created many corridors in the heart of rocks.
 

This valley has four Canyons from four sides. The walls get close to each other somewhere with a distance of a haft meter. It seems that this kind of valleys related to the Anticline fractures and creating of the Salt dome. The entrance of the northern-southern canyon is wide with less slope, like a U-shaped. As you head south, the valley become narrow with more slope like a V-shaped.

• What is the best time to go?
   

Late October till early May is the best time to visit the Chahkooh Canyon. During Autumn and Winter, you can see the migratory birds and Dolphins on Qeshm Island and enjoy your travel.

• Getting there?
   

The address of Chahkooh Canyon is: East Chahu Village, Qeshm Island, Hormozgan Province. To reach there, you should enter the western road from Dargahan Square. When you get to the Direstan crossing after 20 kilometers, take the straight road. You will get to a square after 11 kilometers then turn right. Before getting to the Chahu Village turn left after 39 kilometers. You will see the Chahkooh Canyon after about two kilometers. Pay attention, to use public transportation you can only one choice take a taxi.
