
Falak-ol-Aflak Castle is one of the monuments of Lorestan province, which was built on the top of a hill.
Falak-ol-Aflak Castle dates back to the Sasanian Empire. The name of this castle has changed to Falak-ol-Aflak during the Qajar era. This castle was built on the top of a large hill near the Khorramabad city. There were twelve towers in the castle, only eight of them has remained. It was used as a military garrison and political prison in the Qajar era. Currently, Falak-ol-Aflak Castle is a symbol of Khorramabad and use as an archaeological museum and museum of anthropology.
Falak-ol-Aflak Castle has an area of 5300 square meters. The height of the tallest wall of this castle is about 22.5 meters above the ground. The inside of the castle consists of four big halls, two courtyards, chambers, and some gates to the north. One of the interesting architectural points of this castle is a hidden escape route on the south side and the underground routes on the north and east sides. Also, there is an equipped laboratory in the castle for the restoration of ancient objects, with a big library beside it.
Falak-ol-Aflak Castle is made of stone, red brick, and adobe with gypsum and lime mortar. The entrance gate is placed on the southwest tower with a height of three meters and a width of ten meters. You will enter the first courtyard after passing the entrance corridor.
This courtyard has been designed in the direction of north-south with a length of 31 and a width of 22.5 meters. It consists of four towers in around, with two of them placed on the north and northwest, and the other two placed on the south and southwest.
The bath of Falak-ol-Aflak Castle is placed on the north side of the first courtyard, near the well. This well has a depth of 40 meters which located on the northeast side of the first courtyard. Also, this well was considered the water supply of the castle. This bath can be used until the Qajar era, but now only some pottery tubes and underground channels have remained.
This courtyard has designed in the direction of east-west with a length of 29 and a width of 21 meters. It has four towers, the same as the first courtyard. Also, it consists of four big halls that are linked together. Currently, these linked halls are used as the museum.
Late June until late September is the best time to visit Falak-ol-Aflak Castle. You can spend an enjoyable Summer during this period.
Falak-ol-Aflak Castle is located on the Davazdah Borji Street. You can take a taxi or get there via public transportation, such as a bus. Ride a bus and get off at the Sabzeh-Meydan station. It is a three-minute walk from the station to the castle.
