Taftan volcano mountain

Taftan mountain is one of the beautiful and the highest peaks in Iran and further it is the only active volcano.

Taftan volcano is southeast of Iran located in Sistan and Baluchestan Province. It is 4042 meters above sea level, among the highest mountains in Iran.

In Balochi, "tepet" means warm. The name of the Taftan is rooted in the word Tapptan, which is the addition word Tapptan itself.

Its main body consists of two mountains, which are connected by a saddle and a narrow section. This mountain has many peaks that Chehel Tan (Forty tons) is volcano peak’s Taftan. Modarkuh, Sobhkuh, and Narkuh are other peaks of Taftan.

According to locals, forty religious riders lost on the main peak, so they call it "Chehel Tan" (Forty tons).

From the crater of this volcano, sulfur gases are released and at the entrance to volcanic cavities, pure sulfur boards are abundant.

A material that released from the Taftan volcanic peak, if combined with water, produces a dangerous toxic substance called sulfuric acid, also known as Soltani.

• Taftan lakes

At Taftan Heights, there are three lakes which one of the most famous lakes is Daryasar.

There are two lakes in the northern part of Taftan, whose water is shallow and sweet and the other is relatively large and salty water.

Also, various rivers such as Ladiz and Gazd originate from this mountain.

• Vegetation and Animal coverages

The Vegetation coverage such as Pistacia Atlantica, Almond, Tamarix, Ebony, Artemisia, Prunus scoparia, and Vegetation like Herb, Chives, Caper bush, Chicory, Rhubarb, Pennyroyal.

The animal coverage area consists of animals such as Fox, Wolf, Jackal.

• What is the best time to go?

To climb to Taftan Mountains, it can launch in all months of the year, but in the winter, due to heavy winds, climbing to the summit is very hard and long.

• Getting there?

To access Mount Taftan, you must travel to Khash city in Sistan and Baluchestan Province. On the Khash Road to Zahedan, if you move from Khash to the north after about 20 km, a large panel shows you the path to the Taftan Peak.

If you move from Zahedan towards Khash, about 130 km you would reach the outskirts of Tamandan and Kusheh.

There is a total of four main ways to climb to Taftan that basically, climbers prefer to the western side for climbing because the western side has a haven equipped. To use this route, you should coordinate with the mountaineering board of Sistan and Baluchestan province.
