Si-o-se-pol Bridge

When the name of the city of Isfahan comes to mind, everyone remembers Si-o-se-pol bridge. A large bridge on the Zayanderud river, which displays its unique beauty on the river.

The bridge of Si-o-se-pol made during the Safavid period, Shah Abbas. It was built by the commander of Shah Abbas, Allahverdi Khan. Allahverdi Khan was a descendant of Georgian people. There are 33 letters in the Georgian language. Therefore, people believed that this number was the figure of letters in this language. But later, it turned out that the bridge had 40 arches and this belief completely rejected. Over time, these 40 arches turned into 33 numbers due to the destruction.

At the time of Shah Abbas, the main plan of the Isfahan city was Chaharbagh, which consisted of two perpendicular axes. Si-o-se-pol bridge was placed along one of these principal axes to connect Charbagh Abbasi to the upper Chaharbagh, the Garden of Hezar Jarib, Abbasabad and the New Julfa district.

The materials that used to build the Si-o-se-pol bridge are stone, brick, Sarooj and, plaster. Experts say that moisture strengthens this bridge. That's why the Si-o-se-pol bridge did not destroy during the time. However, it should be noted that the water of the Zayanderud River has dried up, and this is an overflowing river only in the days of Nowruz. That's why the bridge is at risk of destruction.
