The pristine forests of Khoshk-e Daran with unique cover have been transformed into the pristine museum of the Western Natural History of Mazandaran. This forest is considered to be the only remnant of plain forest ecosystems in northern Iran.
Khoshk-e Daran is one of the last plain forests in Iran. This forest is located in Mazandaran province with an area of about 254 hectares. There are several plant species in this forest, some of which are as follows:
Fluffy Alder which this kind of tree is on the verge of extinction. Fluffy Alder (which this kind of tree is on the verge of extinction.), Parrotia persica, pomegranate, European hornbeam, Oak, Date-plum, Pterocarya fraxinifolia, Ulmus glabra, important kind of Box, Loquat, and Wild jasmine.
Various and abundant species of animals have also lived in the forest, such as: Jackal, Wolf, pig, Wildcat, Grey heron, Goose, Duck, Cormorant, Great egret and little egret.
Khoshk-e Daran has a beautiful Caspian Sea coast and proximity to tourist cities and accommodation is among the best tourist areas of Iran. On the outskirts of this area, there is a natural history museum that has a taxidermy collection of northern Iranian wildlife.
