Ancient inscriptions
These inscriptions were carved in granite in two sections during the Achaemenid Empire under the rule of Darius and Xerxes I. Both inscriptions were carved in the three ancient languages: Old Persian, Neo- Babylonian and Neo-Elamite. During this time, these ancient inscriptions were called by two names: Ganjnameh and Jangnameh. In Persian, Ganjnameh refers to the stories about a treasure. People believed that these inscriptions recited a mystery of treasure. Jangnameh probably refers to the warfare of the Achaemenid kings.
Why did the Achaemenid kings choose this area to carve the inscriptions? The caravans of Darius the Great and Xerxes I passed through this route during the Achaemenid Empire. Also, this road connects Ecbatana, the summer capital of the Achaemenid Empire, to Babylon. Due to this crowded and safe route, the kings of the Achaemenid Empire found there a safe place for carving these inscriptions.
