Madakto is an ancient city dating back over 1000 years ago, located in the world's largest geopark in Ilam province.
Madakto, also known as seymareh, is an ancient city on the west and southwest side of Darreh Shahr. Darreh Shahr is one of the ancient city of Iran which is located in Ilam province. Madakto is the ancient name of Seymareh. Due to the green nature, springs, plains, and hunting ground, Madakto has chosen as the summer capital of Elam civilization during the Sasanian Empire.
This ancient city with an area of 200 hectares is a historical site in the Ilam province. Due to the abundance and diversity of historic castles in the city, Darreh Shahr is known as the the city of castles in Iran.
In terms of geology, it is considered to be as the largest Geopark in the world. It seems that the earthquake destroyed the city in 946. Some unique stucco has found in Madakto that are fabulous.
Farming, gardening, and animal husbandry were the main jobs of people in this area. Grapes, pomegranate, common fig, apple, corn, rice, wheat, cucumbers, sesame, and livestock feed are planted in Darreh Shahr.
By visiting the Madakto, not only you visit historical attractions, but also take part in the local celebrations of this area. Lurish music is playing in different ceremonies of this area such as Nowruz or wedding ceremonies.
Gavmishan Bridge is the largest historical bridge in the western side of Iran which is located on the Seymareh River. This bridge has a length of 175 meters and a width of eight meters. It takes 25 minutes by car from Madakto to this bridge. Also you can visit a lot of historical monuments in this area such as: Chahar Taghi Darreh Shar, Seyed Seif Addin Mausoleum, Majin District, and Sheykh Makan Castle.
Due to the climate of Ilam province, the best time to visit Madakto ancient city is during Spring and Summer. You will enjoy the beauty of green nature during this period.
Darreh Shahr is located 142 kilometers from the Ilam city on the road of Ilam-Pol Dokhtar. It takes three hours by car to get there from Ilam. If you are an ecotourism buff, suggest you visit the Marbera Waterfall near to the Darreh Shahr on the route of Pol Dokhtar.
