Cheshmeh Ali is one of the ancient, spectacular and recreational sites of the Shahr-e Ray that is located south of Tehran and north of the Shahr-e Ray.
This spring is located in the vicinity of the tomb of Ibn Babawayh, Tughrul Tower, Rashkan Castle and below the Rey Castle. Cheshmeh Ali passes through a large rock and flows south and then southeast. Cheshmeh Ali dated back to about 8000 years ago. The ancient name for this spring was Surini, probably attributed to the great dynasty of the Parthian and Sasanian periods. Later, it became known as Cheshmeh Ali because of the name of the first Imam (Ali) Shiite.
Opposite this fountain, there is a rock which on this rock, there is a relief. This relief illustrates the role of Fath-Ali Shah Qajar and his courtiers and sons who have come together. Also, there is a Rey castle top of this rock which has a long history.
In the past, carpet sellers and people of Tehran brought their rugs to this fountain for washing. People believed that the fountain had a great cleaning result and made the carpet brighter.
This city's climate is hot and dry like Tehran. But it can be said, Rey climate is hotter than Tehran. If you want to go to Shar-e Rey, go there in the cool of spring or on the beautiful autumn days.
Cheshmeh Ali is located at the end of 22 Bahman Street, at the bottom of a large rock. You can have a short trip from Tehran to Shahr-e Rey by metro, but you should know that the metro station is far from the Cheshmeh Ali. After getting off the subway, you should take a taxi and then you will arrive after 15 minutes. But if you want to get to this fountain by car from Tehran, you must go about 21 kilometers distance. Just remember there is heavy traffic between the two cities on weekends and afternoons.
