Tepe Hissar

Tepe Hissar is one of the most valuable archaeological hills of Iran's plateau, which located near Damghan, Semnan province.

Tepe Hissar is an archaeological hill in Damghan that dates back to the seven thousand years BC. Archaeological investigations reveal that people inhabited in Tepe Hissar up to 1700 BC, but after that, no one has lived there. Doctor Schmidt, a German archaeologist, made valuable discoveries on Tepe Hissar. He discovered a castle; the evidence showed that the site had been burnt by people. One of the features of people in this region is the way they bury the dead. They buried the dead toward sunset. The sun was valuable for people in Tepe Hissar. Also, they put precious objects in the grave that were equal for men and women.

Three distinct classes of prehistory were identified on the Tepe Hissar that each of which is classified into smaller divisions. The different classes of Tepe Hissar are as follows:

    • Hissar I

This period dates back to 4200 BC to 3500 BC and represents the first inhabitants of the region. The pottery of Tepe Hissar has a beige color that is derived from Cheshmeh-Ali. The Hissar civilization has taken from this period, and it reflects the beige pottery civilization in this area. Also, the houses of this class have no specific plan.

  • Hissar II

This class was habitable for a short period. The gray pottery with tall bases, smooth edges, and a flat bottom has been discovered in this class. While the discoveries of these two periods are similar, they are quite different. The houses of this period were built with a quadrilateral plan. Most of them have a space as a kitchen in the center and some chambers arranged around.

  • Hissar III

This period dates back to the Akkadian Empire in Mesopotamia. The burned discoveries date back to this period.
