Vali Castle

Vali Castle is one of the most valuable monuments located in the city of Ilam. This castle dates back to the Qajar era.

Due to the temperate climate in this city, during the Qajar period, it was considered by the Wali of that time. Ilam was known as behind the mountain, during the Qajar era and was considered a good encampment for the Wali of the time. Vali Castle is one of the most significant historical works of this city that has remained since the Qajar period.  

The castle built on the Ghulam Reza Khan Wali ‘s order in 1326 AH. This castle used as a summer accommodation as well. It is located in a place known as Hussein Abad Fili or Top Village. The Vali Castle built on a 2500 square meter area. The castle has a central courtyard with an area of 700 square meters. The courtyard is surrounded by the mansion on three sides. The southern side of the castle looks like a trapezoid. On the northern side of the Vali Castle, there is a part of the Shah Neshin, which is much bigger than the rest of the castle's rooms. The Shah Neshin is a room with the high roof in Iranian architecture, and a half-dome is located at the top of the roof. Because the ceiling was high, this room is colder than other rooms. In the middle of the Shah Neshin, there is also a small pond decorated with marble. The water was provided by the Bibi Fountain. The water of this spring was transmitted to the central courtyard of the castle by a waterpipe (this tube was made of pottery.).

Like other castles, the Vali Castle also has a guard tower. The castle has two guarded towers built in the form of a semicircle.

Vale Castle has three entrances that are located in the western, eastern and southern of the castle. The main entrance of this castle is settled on the south side. The main entrance of the castle was built in a Greek-style. The other two entrances were connected to the courtyards by the corridor. These entrances made for guests.

Nowadays, this castle has become the Museum of Anthropology in Ilam.

Vali castle was registered in the national list of Iran in 1376 as one of the most valuable monuments of Ilam province.

Ilam is a beautiful city located in the west of Iran and amongst a group of mountains. The city is located at high altitudes and has a mild and mountain climate. If you plan to travel to this beautiful city, we suggest you go there in the spring or summer.
